SHIRLEY SHACKELFORD 1964 - 1986 SECRETARY, RESERVATIONS AGENT, TICKET COUNTER AGENT, STATION AGENT GSW DAL MKC STL DEN JAC GEG LAX PSP I started to work with CN as as secretary to Jim Shores and Truman Jones at our general office at Amon Carter field. I left there after three months and moved into reservations. The reason for this was that I could take shorthand with very little speed and I found out that Jim took shorthand at 220 words a minute and he would sit on my desk to dictate at that speed to me. When I went to reservations I worked with Bonnie Bias, Jim Haley (now deceased) Mildred Silmon, until our merger in 1968 then I moved to Denver res. We had a track for the res card reservations to go down and a board on the wall where we would post when a flight was filling up. My, what a change from todays modern day technolgy. But we sure had fun. -Shirley Shackelford (8/14/99) I was secretary for Jim Shores and Truman Jones when I first started with Central in 1961. Then transferred to reservations in hanger building. I might have some old pictures of the hanger buried in my box of memories. -Shirley Ross Shackelford. res agent DFW/DEN/MCI/STL/PUB. and TCA DEN/JAC/GEG/LAX/PSP (9/22/02) Jim Haley died around 1978 or 1979. I remember because I was transferred from reservations to the airport in Denver in 1978. I was on my way to the airport to work when Mildred Silman (Jackson) formally CN in FSM, went by his apt and found him dead. She called me to come by his apt in Aurora and when I called in to work to ask for time off for the day the supervisor made me come to work. Mildred is still working at DIA for this Frontier part-time. In October F9 closed service to ONT and I am now the station manager in Reno for F9. I could have transferred to LIT but chose RNO because it is closer to my home in PSP. -Shirley Shackelford (12/5/04) I started with TTA at Love Field in 1960. In 1964 I started with CN as Jim Shores and Tom Lambs secretary at GSW. After about 3 months I transferred to Res at GSW and Jim Haley was working in res then. When we closed GSW Res we went over to Dallas on Turtle Creek and when that closed we all went to Overland Park, Kansas. Our res office was in the old weight watchers building. When they closed that we went to downtown STL and worked there until it closed. Then on to Denver Res. Jim, Mildred Silmon, Cheryl Cook, Gloria Bowers, went too. When Jim died he had a apt in Aurora. He had diabeties and had a heart attack. He was alone when he died. His wife lived in Lawton, where he commuted to. He was buried in Ft Worth where the funeral was. I am almost sure that was 1978, 1979 because I went to Jackson Hole and on to Spokane in 1980 and 1981. When I worked at GSW RES I was on the all night shift. My son Brad was 2 or 3 and he would sleep in a DC3 down in the hanger. The mainentence guys watched over him while I worked. I could not afford a baby sitter since I was making a big salary of $210.00 a month. I had an apt in Irving for $75.00. Bonnie Bias and I used to drive rent a cars from GSW to Houston after work with the kids in the back seat and bring one back and go back to work. We received $15.00 each way for that 8 hour job. We were dirt poor!!!HA but we had a good time. Time has just flown by. I am an old fart now also. I do not know when I will retire, I am overdue, but have concerns how I will be able to do so and live comfortably. -Shirley Shackelford (12/6/04) Subject: TUESDAY SHIRLEY SHACK I SPOKE TO SHIRLEY YESTERDAY; SHE SOUNDED GREAT. THIS IS HER SECOND STROKE, SHE CAN NOT WALK NOR GET INTO A WHEELCHAIR. SHE IS IN THERAPY AND WILL SEE WHERE THAT TAKES HER. SHE IS PLANNING ON GOING TO WASHINGTON BUT HER PLAN IS TO LIVE NEAR BRAD THIS SHOULD BE IN A MONTH. SHE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT LOSING HER FRIENDS SINCE SHE HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO WRITE, ETC. I TOLD HER WE WERE ALL STILL HANGING AROUND AND WAITING FOR HER TO GET BETTER. JUST WANTED EVERYONE TO KNOW WHAT I FOUND OUT SO IF YOU WANT PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PASS THIS ALONG. TRISH SWANSON HAWK (4/9/07) Shirley is in a different rehab place now in Reno trying to walk, she can't seem to keep her balance she can walk about 5 steps now. Brad will be going to Reno around the 14th of April and bringing her up her, he is flying her home and then later go get her car. He will be going to Palm Springs in the RV to bring back her stuff there. She hasn't sold her place in Palm Springs yet, but it is for sale, Jim is going to buy some of her furniture and Brad will take the rest. Don't know yet how long she will stay with Brad, she'll want to get her own place but she will probably have to go to assisted living, she also might come up here awhile, I do have stairs so don't know how that will go. -Rae Carey (3/23/07) S A SHACKELFORD Seniority date of 11/9/64 on the TCA group on the 7/1/84 FL/ALEA seniority list. -Jake Lamkins (4/10/07) Email to Shirley: Get Well! Hi Shirley, I heard about your medical problems and just wanted to wish you a speedy and complete recovery. Hang in there and keep fighting. You'll be in my thoughts. -Jake Lamkins (4/14/07) I just thought I would drop a line for Mom, she thanks everyone for all the cards, flowers and encouragement during these hard times. As some of you know, she had a lobe removed from her lung in June of 2006. She beat the cancer and went back to work as manager for FL in RNO. On Jan 13 2007 in RNO, she had a stroke while having dinner with Mr and Mrs Bob Wygall. Bob had called the ambulance and she arrived at Renown Medical Hospital within 10 min. Bob mentioned she had her senses about her, she told the ambulance folks, she just had her hair done and not to mess it up. She also had won $1400.00 at a casino and asked Bob to hold on to it for her. That is typical of my mother, don't mess with Texas, my money or my hair!!!. On Jan 18, Dr Song removed a golf ball size blood clot from her brain, the surgery was text book. She has been in rehabilitation and should be released within a couple of weeks. She has her place in PSP up for sell and plans to travel around and just drop in on friends. Her team mates at the new Frontier have volunteered there Love, support and even there vacation to help her out. My fellow peers at Boeing had a Hot Dog cook off and raised 1500.00 for her. Its an honor to here her say I love you and call me tomorrow, how lucky can a son be? Sincerely -Brad Shackelford (4/17/07) I was able to get up to see Shirley for a few hours last Wednesday, long side trip from China but worth it to see a dear friend of FL gang. I made the journey as much for me as for her. Shirley knew me and her mind was very good most of the day I was there, she joked and was her wonderful self for much of the time. Lots of chuckles and her smile is still worth a Million Bucks. She had me sneak in food from Japanese resturant. Her body is suffering and she is in pain; she does have some confusion and memory loss, but I told her not to worry, I have had both afflictions since I was 20. Her son Brad has been a real rock of strength for her; I admire that he is such a good, loving son. She is grateful for his attention and for the thoughts of her many friends. What can I say. It is hell to get old but it is good to have old friends. -Jim Kyte (10/9/07) Shirley Shackelford Called Shirley yesterday to see how she is doing. She is still in the nursing home and has broken an arm in two places. She sounded upbeat and wishes she was up and about. She is to get her computer back. -Trish Swanson Hawk (11/23/08) I'm now in SEA working for the County.....just 7 1/2 yrs 'til I get to retire back to PSP. If you remember Shirley Shackelford, originally from CN res and DEN tck ctr, and finally a supervisor for me in PSP, she is in a rehab facility up here in Everett. Has finally retired from F9 after a stroke and is recuperating nicely. -Gary Murrell (2/28/09) I just visited Shirley Shackelford yesterday at her apt in Arlington, WA. She is now 75 and has a hard time getting around, and she's really bored. Would love a call from some of her old FL or Central friends. -Gary Murrell (11/11/10) Heading to Palm Springs tomorrow. Frontier Airlines is starting new service on Thursday. They have asked my mother to cut the ribbon. Should be fun. You just never know who you might see in PSP. Shirley is doing better walking and very excited about PSP. She is very honered that they asked her to cut ribbon. She would like for the seats to stay full I think PSP has always been her baby. -Brad Shackelford (11/15/11) I am home now at Olympic Place. Been gone a month in a hospital and rehab place. I had a severe bladder infection and blood. Had a pic line in my arm and feeding me antibiotics in the arm. All is well now. God is good. I love you. -Shirley Shackelford (7/8/13) I started for Central in 1964. Been everywhere - DFW, PUB, DEN, STL, MKC, JAC, WYS, GEG, PSP, LAX SEA, ONT, and RNO. Have been with the old and new FL. After all of that I would like to wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving!!!! -Shirley Shackelford (11/28/13) I am at the University of Colorado Hospital. I had this breathing problem on the airplane. I called the paramedics to my room at the Stapleton Plaza Friday 2am. Jimbo, Matt and I were going to Cabo St Lucas, Mexico For a week starting Sat morning on Frontier. We had to cancel it all. The doctors are still trying to find why this had happened. I will let you know soon. The hospital is looking for a blood clot! -Shirley Shackelford (6/3/14) Today is Shirley's 80th birthday. -Jake (12/25/15) This is a hard post to write. Shirley Shackelford, my longtime friend (over 50 years) is being moved to a hospice. She is fighting that last fight. Shirley was recently diagnosed with brain cancer and needs all our prayers. Her long term memory is great but short term memory not so good. Shirley and I have been friends since our kids were toddlers. My son Don was the oldest, Shirley's son Brad, a year younger and my daughter Vicki a year younger than Brad. Shirley and our kids lived together 3 different times as struggling single moms trying to raise the kids thru Central, Frontier and Continental years. Don is no longer with us but Brad, Vicki are still like brother and sister. -Bonnie Bias (12/31/16) FLacebook I spoke to Brad tonight. Shirley is too frail for chemo so the outlook is not good. The hospice she is moving to is in the same facility she was living so she will still have familiar faces. I'm sure she would appreciate notes from the FLamily: 20909 Olympic PL, Arlington WA 98223 I asked Brad to show Shirley our FLacebook page so she could see all our love and concern. -Jake Lamkins (1/1/17) I spoke with both Brad and Shirley over the phone last night. I can always hear her saying "I love you" with that El Paso TX accent. She was a very good friend to my Mom (Sallie Meyer) for a very long time. Love her so much. -Kelly McCrea Kincaid (1/1/17) I'm speechless not knowing what to say. The words just don't come out. Such a beautiful person about says it don't it. Love to Shirley and family. -Hal Geyer (1/1/17) When I think of Shirley, I see smiles and laughter That will never change. -Kay Morey (1/1/17) Doug and I are so sorry to hear this. We have many fond memories of Shirley. She checked in our flt to Vegas when we got married (2-14-80) and was the the only person we told why we were going. Love that Lady!!! -Kathy Johnston Bittner (1/3/17) I worked with Shirley in LAX and after FL went under we both worked in PSP for different airlines. We used to have long talks about the good ole days at FL. She is such a special Lady. -Penny Tritthart (1/3/17) FLight West: Shirley Shackelford Bonnie Bias posted at FLacebook that Shirley flew west yesterday afternoon. SHIRLEY SHACKELFORD 1964 - 1986 SECRETARY, RESERVATIONS AGENT, TICKET COUNTER AGENT, STATION AGENT GSW DAL MKC STL DEN JAC GEG PSP -Jake Lamkins (3/13/17) Shirley Shackelford I'm assuming Shirley's son Brad may have informed you one one the best FL smiles ever flew west yesterday. Brad and FL great Rae Carey were at her side -Jim Kyte (1/13/17) Yes, I got the sad news, Jim. Would you consider writing a eulogy for her memorial webpage? I know she was your good friend. I wrote a eulogy for my brother and found it soothed the grief some. Maybe it will do the same for you. -Jake Lamkins (3/13/17) Thanks for the thought. I'm not a writer like you, but if you have access to her ALEA or FL history and can send to me for an outline, I could fashion something with personal antidotes that you could dress up. I did work with her with FL in DEN JAC GEG LAX and know of her Station Manager jobs at new Frontier at ELP SEA RNO ONT and LAX and we both had homes in PSP so I do have Shirley stories. -Jim Kyte (3/13/17) Shirley's son Brad advised me yesterday that although Shirley has a plot in Kilgore, her choice was to be cremated and have the ashes placed on the top of the mountain in Palm Springs. Brad did not advise when that might take place nor any plans for a memorial service. He is still pretty overwhelmed. -Bonnie Bias (3/15/17) S A SHACKELFORD Emp# 07586 Station agent seniority date and DOH of 11/9/64 DOB 12/25/35 per the Oct 1986 FL/ALEA Seniority List and Dec 1984 Pension Records -Jake Lamkins (3/24/17) Re: Shirley Shackelford Thank you, for the wonderful memories of her.
